Turn your bathroom and living room into a health spa with fresh towels and homemade facial cleanser (cut a recipe out of a summer lifestyle magazine of your choice.) Or try out those sample-sized beauty products you’ve accumulated over time and haven’t had the heart to throw away. Be imaginative and make a menu of all the services your spa offers, from healthy edible snacks to scalp massages. Make special stationary, and send your date an appointment confirmation card.”

Transforming my house for Saturday night’s Great Cheap Date Challenge was in fact challenging. Setting the mood for our home spa night required relocating the Elmo potty seat to make room for a basket of candles, scrubs, and lotions next to the bathtub. Clark started asking me at 6 o’clock if we could put the kids to bed, which I thought was kind of cute. Part of the fun for both of us with these different date ideas, is the anticipation we feel leading up to our dates that we’re about to somehow make another special memory. While Clark and Salem worked in the yard all day Saturday, I spent the day in the kitchen with Mia putting together our gourmet spa menu (recipes soon to come). Everything was going swimmingly until Taylor Swift’s song “Never Grow Up” began to play while I was showing Mia how to hold the measuring spoons.

“Oh darling don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up
Just stay this little
Oh darling don’t you ever grow up, don’t you ever grow up
It could stay this simple
I won’t let nobody hurt you
Wont let no one break your heart
No one will desert you
Just try to never grow up
Never grow up”

Next thing I know, I’m boo hoo-ing in my Baker’s chocolate when Clark walks in and gives me that look that all men give like, “Seriously, you’re crying?” Just how long can I get away with blaming an episode like that on being postpartum?

Clark took care of the kid’s bedtime routine while I attempted to transform our living room into a luxurious health spa. I lit every candle in the house and had a YouTube playlist of relaxing and meditative instrumental music on repeat in the background. I scattered silk rose petals all over the living room floor (the very same ones that Clark used when he proposed), and I had all of our spa “treatments” arranged for the evening.

After all that, we were total mush. Like a couple of wet noodles, we climbed into bed and proceeded to have the BEST sleep we’ve had in ages. I haven’t escaped the multi-tasking house of cards that is my mind at any given moment of the day like that since our honeymoon. It felt like we took a vacation without leaving the house and without having to set any time limits. I told Clark, it was probably one of my favorite memories we’ve made in this house thus far. Home Health Spa night will become a regular occurrence for Team Beasley.
